UMass Memorial Marlborough to reopen after heat, water problems

Walk-ins to the emergency room will be treated prior to 9 a.m., the health care system said.

Medical care that was halted during the shutdown will resume Thursday, specifically the UMass Memorial Cancer Center at Marlborough, cardiac diagnostics, cardiac rehab, partial hospitalization program, outpatient radiology and laboratory services and infectious disease.

Multiple services remained open this week, including care at the Medical Office Building, womenโ€™s imaging, and phlebotomy.

Surgery at the Marlborough campus remains on hold but โ€œwill reopen soon. Until that time, surgeries will continue to be rescheduled at another location or canceled.โ€

The incident started around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, when employees discovered that a large valve had broken, which caused flooding that affected the boiler system and resulted in reduced heat in parts of the building, a spokesperson for the system said Monday.

The 70 patients were transferred overnight to other hospitals in the UMass Memorial system, which operates 10 facilities, including in Worcester, Milford, Southbridge, and Leominster.

While the statement said inpatient services were being restored, UMass Memorial declined to say whether the 70 patients that were relocated have been returned to Marlborough.
