Newswise — Chronic low back pain affects millions of people, yet many never discover the true source of their discomfort. In this episode, Dr. Edward Yoon, Chief of Interventional Radiology at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, explains a breakthrough treatment designed for a very specific and often overlooked type of back pain.

Dr. Yoon discusses basivertebral nerve ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that targets vertebrogenic back pain, a condition linked to inflammation in the endplates of the spine. This inflammation shows up on MRI as Modic changes, making it easier to identify who can benefit from the procedure. Unlike injections that offer temporary relief, this treatment can provide long-lasting or even permanent improvement, because the targeted nerve typically does not grow back.

Patients whose pain worsens with sitting, bending forward, or lifting may be strong candidates for this therapy. However, Dr. Yoon also emphasizes that this procedure does not help with muscular pain, disc herniations, fractures, or arthritis of the spine’s facet joints.
