Delhi to merge major hospitals under AIIMS-like autonomous body

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Sunday a plan to merge prominent hospitals including GTB, the Cancer Institute, and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality into a single autonomous body, modelled on AIIMS, to enhance healthcare efficiency and establish Delhi as a leading national medical centre.

The Chief Ministerโ€™s Office outlined that this integration aims to resolve the current issue of fragmented resources and manpower, fostering a more cohesive healthcare system within the city.

A key objective of the merger is to substantially increase postgraduate medical seats. The CMO explained that combining faculty members from the different hospitals will fulfil the teaching requirements needed to train a greater number of specialists.

โ€œFor instance, departments like radiology, pathology, and anaesthesia are expected to see a massive jump in available seats once their teams are combined and vacancies are filled,โ€ the office said.

The plan also involves introducing new postgraduate courses in disciplines currently lacking them, such as radiation oncology and cardiology. The government intends to recruit additional faculty and develop better academic infrastructure, including modern laboratories, hostels, and lecture halls, to provide an improved learning environment.

This expansion is designed to pave the way for a future increase in MBBS seats as well.

According to the CMO, the initiative extends beyond simply adding hospital beds; it aims to promote medical research and advanced education. โ€œBy optimising the use of high-tech equipment and expert staff, the Delhi government hopes to provide students with better training and patients with superior care, establishing the city as a leader in both medical treatment and innovation,โ€ the statement added.

The merger seeks to tackle longstanding challenges of fragmented resources and manpower that have affected healthcare delivery efficiency in the capital. Establishing a unified system akin to AIIMS is expected to streamline operations, improve coordination, and maximise the use of existing infrastructure and expertise.
