
The Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, has been able to provide relief to more than 100 patients suffering from brain aneurysms using flow diverter treatment in recent years.
According to doctors, brain aneurysm is a condition that affects the blood vessels in the brain and can lead to bleeding and stroke. An aneurysm refers to the bulges that form in blood vessels due to weakness in the vessel walls.
Sources in the Department of Interventional Radiology said on Sunday (June 7) that coiling and flow diverter treatment are the two types of endovascular procedures performed to cure this condition. They are done without opening the skull. A catheter is inserted through a small hole in the blood vessel in the leg and guided to the blood vessels in the brain. A flow diverter is a stent-like device placed in the blood vessel affected by an aneurysm to restore normal blood flow.
K.G. Sajeeth Kumar, Principal, said that the Kozhikode MCH had performed the second-highest number of flow diverter treatments in the State, after Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram. The hospital has also successfully treated over 250 patients with coiling treatment.
The aneurysm treatment is carried out under the coordination of Dr. Sajeeth Kumar, N.J. John, Head of Radiology department; K.R. Rahul, interventional radiologist; Binu Sajid, Head of Anaesthesia department, Jacob George, Head of Neurology department, Shaju Mathew, Head of Neurosurgery department, and P. Geetha, Head of General Medicine department.
