Australia’s first steel mill to run entirely on electricity is to be built in Newcastle by Ross Garnaut-chaired Greensteel, and will be backed by the federal government as part of its push to develop a low-emissions manufacturing industry.
The processing plant, to be built on the home of the disused BHP Newcastle steelworks, involves an initial commitment of $500 million by the firm founded by brothers Mena and Romany Ibrahim, owners of the country’s largest privately owned radiology group.
