Axarquia’s healthcare revolution: Hospital expansion delivers faster care and new facilities

Andalucian President Juanma Moreno inaugurated the upgraded Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquia in Velez-Malaga on Monday, March 23 to highlight a notable quality improvement in local healthcare delivery following a targeted €4 million investment from the Andalucian authorities.

Expansion creates space for enhanced medical areas

Construction of two fresh buildings has shifted supportive services, including the auditorium, cafeteria, chapel and education rooms, to separate locations. Space previously occupied by these elements now supports enlargement of core clinical zones such as the day hospital section, radiology facilities and digestive medicine units together with a brand-new continuity of care unit focused on chronic condition management.

This strategic reordering addresses limitations in the original 1980s structure, which had reached maximum operational functionality some time ago yet offered opportunities for adjacent expansion.

Sustained funding and staff increases power ongoing progress

Regional commitments since 2019 have channelled €11 million into multiple improvement projects and exceeded €4 million for advanced equipment procurement drawing on both local budgets and European Union support. Personnel numbers have expanded markedly during the same period, rising from 1,423 to 1,832 dedicated professionals across various roles. Broader service capabilities have emerged together with complete modernisation of the hospital‘s vehicle fleet to improve operational efficiency.

Team commitment leads to sharp declines in patient waiting times

According to Moreno, medical staff have exhibited strong dedication throughout periods of rapid population increases along the coastal belt, especially in summer holiday seasons. Such efforts have translated into measurable gains with reduced waiting lists, particularly evident in specialist appointments and surgical cases known for greater complexity. Surgical operation delays shortened substantially from an average of 91 days down to 66 days, delivering a highly encouraging result for the community.

Moreno expressed gratitude towards the entire leadership group and all frontline workers who maintained essential services through challenging times and established themselves as outstanding benchmarks for the region.

Further advancements along these lines promise continued elevation of standards at this vital healthcare institution serving the Axarquia area.
