The Departments of Radiology and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, K.A.P.V Government Medical College, and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi have conducted the facility’s first amniocentesis procedure on a 35-year-old antenatal woman.
Amniocentesis is a pre-natal diagnostic test for foetal cells that detects genetic, chromosomal, and developmental issues.
According to an official press release on Saturday, the procedure was carried out free of cost on the pregnant woman at 21 weeks of gestation who was identified as high risk for Down Syndrome based on antenatal screening findings of a unossified nasal bone and an abnormal double marker test.
“After thorough counselling and obtaining informed consent, amniocentesis was performed safely under radiological guidance. The collected samples were processed and sent to associated laboratories without any financial burden to the patient,” said the release.
