Hyderabad: The urology department doctors at the Gandhi Hospital performed a complex procedure of removing the affected adrenal gland on a 27-year-old woman from Mahbubnagar district who had been suffering from severe, uncontrolled hypertension for the past two years.The patient, S. Lavanya of Chityal village in Makthal mandal, had been on three different blood pressure medications, but her condition remained uncontrolled. Detailed investigations revealed that she was suffering from pheochromocytoma, a rare tumour of the adrenal gland that releases excessive stress hormones, causing sudden and dangerous spikes in blood pressure.The urology team led by Dr Ravichander explained that pheochromocytoma is an uncommon condition, affecting only two to eight people per million annually. The surgery involved the removal of the affected adrenal gland through a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure.These operations are considered high-risk as blood pressure can rise to life-threatening levels during the surgery, potentially causing severe damage to the heart and other vital organs. The patient required careful blood pressure management before the procedure, close monitoring during surgery and intensive post-operative care, he added.The surgery was performed by the urology team led by Dr Ravichander, with support from the endocrinology team headed by Dr Vijay Shekhar, anaesthesia team led by Dr Muralidhar, and radiology team headed by Dr Srihari.The Gandhi Hospital has successfully managed 10 such cases over the past five years, making it one of the few government hospitals in the country to perform these specialised procedures.Superintendent Dr N. Vani and deputy superintendent Dr Sunil Kumar, along with resident medical officers and operation theatre staff, coordinated the treatment. The patient is recovering well following the surgery, doctors said.
