Guwahati, June 26: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has secured accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH).The certification brings all departments at the state’s largest public healthcare institution, including radiology, in line with national quality standards for the first time. The accreditation, granted under the Quality Council of India, will remain valid for four years from May 29, 2026. It follows an extensive two-day assessment conducted on February 15 and 16, with the final certificate formally received on June 24. GMCH Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya, on Wednesday, called the development a major step forward for the institution. “It is really good news for us. GMCH was already NABL-certified for pathology and microbiology, but radiology was not accredited,” he said, noting that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier directed all medical colleges in the state to pursue both NABH and NABL certification. “Accordingly, we applied, and after the assessment in February, all departments of the medical college met the required standards and received accreditation,” he added. The push to meet those standards was led by Dr Dipu Bhuyan, whose team carried out extensive groundwork to bring every wing of the hospital into compliance ahead of the assessment. Baishya said the accreditation is expected to translate into faster, more streamlined radiological services for patients, with shorter waiting times and quicker turnaround on diagnostic reports. “Now there will be minimal waiting time for radiological procedures. If a patient undergoes an MRI today, we will be able to provide the report the very next day,” he said.
