Signs of measles include a fever, cough, runny nose and sore eyes or a blotchy, red rash.

The viral disease is highly contagious and is spread through airborne droplets.

Measles can cause serious complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis and can require hospitalisation

In Australia, two doses of the measles vaccine are offered to children under the National Immunisation Program, which provides long-term protection from the virus.
