Kuwait performs first endoscopic bile drainage procedure | Kuwait Times Newspaper

KUWAIT: The Ministry of Health announced Wednesday that a medical team from the Gastroenterology Unit at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital has successfully performed Kuwait’s first endoscopic bile drainage procedure through the stomach, avoiding open surgery. The procedure was performed on a Kuwaiti patient who was successfully treated and discharged without complications, the ministry said in a press statement.

The team used an ultrasound-guided technique to create a connection between the bile ducts inside the liver and the stomach, allowing bile to drain and enabling the patient to begin chemotherapy.

The ministry explained that the procedure became necessary after conventional approaches, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and interventional radiology, were unsuccessful in bypassing a cancerous obstruction in the bile ducts. The procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary medical team headed by Dr Yousef Al-Shamali, Consultant of Gastroenterology and Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy. — KUNA
